Today I will cry. I will have no cheer in my mood, no happiness or joviality in my day. Today is the day when the rest of the world celebrates the Irish with green beer and toasted to the Emerald Isle.
Yes the rest of the world goes on with their blind celebration, but I can't. I know the truth. I know who the snakes were. I know how Padriag ran them out of Ireland.
Yes the Irish people are said to have a strangely high rate of alcoholism. Is it any wonder. The once proud and powerful Celts, the people who had roads all throughout Western Europe before the Romans "civilized" them and stole their wealth, now live on some of the most powerful land in the entire world. They live their and they know in the hearts the land is powerful, but they are told by their churches it is not. They are told to acknowledge the power and majesty of the land and it's spirits is evil. They are told to worship their ancestors, some of the most powerful and noble people in the world, is evil and their ancestors are demons.
Yes Padriag didn't remove any snakes, he just got rid of the indigenous pagan religion of the Celts. Rome's final victory.
And what has the good Padriag brought to Ireland? A people divided. Terrorism. Hatred.
And worse a denial and hatred of the power of the land they live on, the very source of their once great religion.
No everything wasn't roses and caramels before Padriag, but what have the Irish been known for since?
Alcohol consumption
A back drop for movies like "Darby O'Gill and the Little People"
Kiss me I'm Irish buttons.
"Silly" stories about Leprechauns
Phui!
Before the son of a bitch "ran the snakes off the island," the Celts, including the Irish, were some of the noblest and richest people in the world. They had roads, as I mentioned before, all over Europe, all the way to Turkey. They had thriving trade routes. They were a people to envy.
Now....Darby O'Gill
So where your green, and drink your green beer and toast to the luck of the Irish.
I will wear black, as I do every year. I will read old folk tales and remember the power and majesty of the Celts. You have a time with mindless cheer, and I will pay homage to my ancestors.
I will remember them and cry for them and pray for the return of the beliefs that made them great.
And in the meantime, I hope Padriag can be found among them, treated like the traitor and kin slayer he is. Condemned to the torture he has wrought upon his kin for generation after generation, until his damage can be undone.
